Ahrex Hooks is a Danish fly-hook company founded in February 2016 by Morten Valeur, his brother Henrik Valeur, and Søren Flarup. Although a comparatively young name in hook making, the company grew out of decades of experience in the Scandinavian fly-fishing and fly-tying trade. Morten and Henrik had previously established The Fly Co., a wholesale fly-tying business that they operated for roughly 24 years before selling it to concentrate on Ahrex. Søren Flarup brought both extensive fishing experience and a background in graphic design, becoming closely associated with Ahrex’s hook design and distinctive visual identity.

The immediate reason for establishing Ahrex was practical. Through years of supplying fly-tying materials, Morten Valeur had encountered recurring problems obtaining established hook patterns consistently and in all required sizes. At the same time, the group believed there were specialized hook designs that were not adequately represented by existing manufacturers. Rather than beginning with a broad catalog of conventional fly hooks, Ahrex initially concentrated on hooks developed around particular styles of fishing.

Ahrex’s first range, introduced in early 2016, was the Nordic Salt series. These hooks were designed primarily for the Scandinavian coastal fishery for sea-run brown trout, where shrimp, scud and small baitfish patterns are commonly fished in salt water. The designs reflected practical requirements encountered by Scandinavian anglers. The NS150 Curved Shrimp, for example, incorporated input from Danish angler Claus Eriksen, including a comparatively large eye intended to make threading the hook easier with cold, wet hands. Although developed for Nordic sea-trout fishing, the series quickly found uses well beyond Scandinavia.

International expansion came unusually quickly. In August 2016 Ahrex appointed Oregon-based Hareline Dubbin as its U.S. distributor, giving the new company access to a large network of American fly shops and commercial tiers. Later that year Ahrex introduced its Predator series for pike, musky and other large predatory fish. The Trout Predator range followed in early 2017, developed partly in cooperation with Swedish streamer tier Andreas Andersson, and was followed by the Home Run series for salmon and steelhead. These early ranges established a pattern that Ahrex has continued to follow: hook families organized around fishing applications rather than simply reproducing traditional hook classifications.

The catalog subsequently expanded into freshwater trout, dry-fly, nymph, jig, salmon, steelhead and specialized saltwater hooks. Ahrex has frequently developed individual models with experienced fly tiers and anglers, using prototypes and field testing before production. This approach has produced both modern interpretations of familiar hook forms and highly specialized designs intended for particular tying techniques or fly styles. The company’s own descriptions make clear that hook design is carried out in-house in consultation with its manufacturing partners; Ahrex should therefore be understood primarily as a Scandinavian hook designer and brand rather than as a traditional Danish hook factory comparable to the vertically integrated hook works of earlier centuries.

Ahrex remained closely identified with Denmark as it expanded. By 2022 the company had moved its offices and warehouse to Hobro, Denmark, near Mariager Fjord—one of Denmark’s important coastal sea-trout fisheries and an appropriate location for a company whose first hooks grew directly from that fishing tradition.

A significant expansion occurred in May 2024, when Ahrex acquired Danish fly-tying manufacturer Pro Sportfisher from its founder, Morten Bundgaard. Pro Sportfisher, established in 2007, is particularly associated with modular tube-fly systems and molded and printed fly-tying components. The acquisition broadened Ahrex beyond hooks into a larger range of fly-tying products while retaining Pro Sportfisher as a recognizable brand. Ahrex is also associated with Core Fly Hooks, a hook range developed in partnership with Hareline and marketed as powered by Ahrex’s hook-design experience. Today both Pro Sportfisher and Core are identified by Ahrex as part of the Ahrex group.

In historical terms, Ahrex represents a newer generation of specialist hook companies. Unlike firms such as Mustad, Allcock or Milward, whose catalogs evolved from large industrial hook-making operations, Ahrex began with fly fishing itself and worked backward toward the hook. Its designs have been shaped by Scandinavian sea-trout fishing, modern streamer tying, predator fishing, salmon and steelhead traditions, and contemporary saltwater techniques. In less than a decade, the company developed from a small Danish specialist brand into an internationally distributed line covering most major branches of modern fly tying while retaining its Scandinavian identity.
