Arthur James: Redditch Needle and Fish-Hook Manufacturer

Arthur James was a prominent Victorian needle and fish-hook manufacturer based in Redditch, Worcestershire—the centre of Britain’s hook-making industry. The firm first appears in local trade directories in 1855 at Brockhill Road. By the late 1860s, James reportedly employed about 160 workers, indicating that his operation had grown well beyond the scale of a small family workshop.

Like many Redditch hook makers, Arthur James produced both fishing hooks and sewing needles. James secured patents relating to needle packaging, counting and preparation during the 1850s, followed by a patent for needle-polishing machinery in 1868. These patents reflect the company’s interest in both manufacturing efficiency and the presentation of its products for sale.

By 1873, Arthur James was listed on Clive Road as a fish-hook manufacturer. Although Arthur James died in 1888, the business continued trading under his name: directories still list Arthur James as a needle and fish-hook manufacturer in 1892 and A. James at Clive Road in 1905. Surviving archival papers also refer to discussions concerning a possible amalgamation with the firm in 1922, showing that the Arthur James name remained active well into the twentieth century.
