Summary

Mustad Qual. 7959 A is a round hook whose shank carries a crank, a deliberate sideways step, near the eye end. The model is known here only from one sales card and the two hooks tied to it.

Its production period, measurements and full size range are not yet documented.

IMG-1Mustad — New entry — image 1 Key Brand sales card for Mustad Qual. 3989, 3990 and 7959 A. The 7959 A hooks, sizes 1/0 and 9, are tied on at the right above their label.

How to identify it

On the Key Brand card, the 7959 A label differs from the 3989 and 3990 labels beside it in three phrases. It reads Mustad-Round Hooks rather than Mustad-Kendal Round Hooks. It reads Forged Straight Ringed rather than T, d. tapered eye or T. d. ball-eye, and Cranked shank rather than With kink in middle of shank.

Loose hooks are harder to place. A forged hook with a straight ring eye, a round bend and a single crank in the eye-end third of a long shank matches the recorded specimens P, but shape alone cannot confirm the quality number I.

LBL-10OBS-6OBS-13

The label calls the shank both Ex. long and Cranked, and gives no X figure for its length. A crank is a deliberate sideways step in the shank. On both recorded specimens it sits about two thirds of the way from the bend top toward the eye P.

At the crank the shank shifts away from the point side by several wire diameters, then runs straight and parallel to the eye P. On the 1/0 specimen, parallel edge highlights along the bend and shank give the forged wire a flat-faced look P.
