How to identify it

Boxes. The lid label reads PARTRIDGE SINGLE SALMON HOOKS, prints CODE M in a bordered panel, and has the size written by hand in a SIZE panel P. The black-on-gold printing has a single panel printed 100 and the maker’s name beneath the bird logo. The red-bordered printing has a diagonally split panel printed 100 and 25, with the maker’s name along the base P.

Cards. Look for separate CODE, SIZE and QTY panels under the orange header, with QTY printed 25 and the size handwritten P. Two printings have a printed M at each top corner beside a coloured band P.

Loose hooks. Keep the package with the hooks. The maker’s Code N is a longer-shanked single salmon hook V, and a loose hook is hard to attribute without its label I.

The card specifies wire graded 2 x heavy and a long point V. On the hooks examined the point is straight and evenly tapered, in line with the point leg P.

The card grades the shank as standard length, a grade within Partridge’s own salmon range I. Compared by silhouette with other hooks in this reference, the shank proportion falls with 2X long patterns and the wire proportion with standard wire E. The difference probably reflects the long shank of a salmon iron measured against general hook conventions I.

Storage and Preservation

Store boxes and cards flat in a dry place, away from damp. Keep tape and adhesive notes off the paper labels, and do not press on worn box ends.

Handle loose hooks by the shank and return them to their own box or card, since a loose hook is hard to attribute without its package.

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

Partridge made its single salmon hooks in three weight ranges, coded M, N and O1, with Code M the super heavyweight V.

Code M was still offered around 1999, in sizes 5/0, 4/0, 3/0, 2/0, 1/0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 V. Its first year of production is not documented.

Design lineage

The maker’s card notes that these hooks were long known as salmon irons, a name it links to their weight and strength V. A salmon iron is a heavy single hook for salmon flies. The design origins of Code M are not documented.

Dating

No package carries a printed date or a barcode P.
An online hook list with a site note dated February 1999 offers Code M in a full size range, so the pattern was available then V.
The box and card printings have not been dated individually.

Partridge of Redditch — Code M packages carry the Partridge of Redditch name. Ted Partridge sold the firm to a syndicate in 1970; Alan Bramley bought it in the mid-1970s, Mustad took it over about 1996, and FishingMatters acquired it in 2009 V. No Machine for the Loop Eye. A 1997 report from the Partridge works in Redditch listed salmon hooks with tapered loop eyes among the jobs that still had to be done by hand, because no machine could do them V.

Handwritten Size Marks and Stickers

Every box and card recorded here has its size written by hand in the SIZE panel P. On the boxes the figures are in brown ink (2/0), grey graphite-like strokes (4/0), and grey or blue-grey ink (6, 8, 10 and 12). On the cards they are in black (4), blue-black (2) and blue (1) ink; one card reads 110, and whether this stands for 1/0 is not established.

White typed stickers on the box tops and edges repeat the code and size, for example M Single Salmon Hooks 10 P. Three cards carry price stickers whose pen figures are covered with red-brown marker, and the first figure cannot be read P.

Who wrote these marks, and when, is not documented.
