IMG-1Mustad — New entry — image 1 Lid label of a box of Mustad Qual. 9238 Mustad-Viking Hooks, No. 1 (P).
2How to identify it
On the recorded box, the model number follows “Qual.” on the lid label, and “Mustad-Viking Hooks” is printed in red below “Hollow Point” P. The lid also carries the Key Brand trademark at upper left P.
The size is marked in violet ink after the printed “No.” rather than printed with the label P. To confirm the reversed point on a loose hook, view it from above or head-on; a side view does not show the offset.
Closed ring eye turned down below the shank line. On the size 1 specimen the loop wire looks slightly thinner than the shank, and its end closes against it P.
Forging flattens the sides of the shank and bend to strengthen the hook V. The size 1 specimen shows broad flats with defined edges along the rear shank and through the bend, where its side-view width is greater than near the eye P.
A reversed point is set sideways, out of the plane of the shank.
“2 extra strong” follows the X-strong convention: wire heavier than standard for the hook size, often equal to the next size up, though makers apply it unevenly V. Traced against the site catalog, the size 1 specimen’s wire thickness falls nearest the standard range.
Box lid: label intact and fully legible, printing unfaded; brown darkening along the right half of the top border, pale stains near the lower border, scuffed left edge, rubbed top-left corner and discoloured right edge P. The hook was photographed with this box; its assignment to the box is probable rather than certain.
