How to identify it

Two package designs are recorded. The green hang card prints CS2000 in both top corners, the heading BRAMLEY/BETTS TAG HOOKS, and a boxed list of CS2001, CS2002 and CS2003. On the size 10 card, the size is handwritten and the CS2002 line is marked with highlighter P.

The black card in a clear packet reads BRAMLEY BETTS L/SHANK TAG HOOKS. It has SIZE 8 in a window and REF CS2002 on the insert P.

For some time John Betts (from the U.S.A.) and I
worked on a completely new concept for hooks (if that
is the right description!).

Many fly fishermen and women want to practise “catch
and release” with minimal damage to the fish. The craft
of tying the fly and the art of deceiving the fish, by
careful presentation of that fly, gives you most of the
enjoyment which you seek in fly fishing.

We tried to find a “hook” which would help you to
achieve this with virtually no damage to the fish.

The answer is in a hook which has no point or barb - but
in its place - an eye. This means that the hook will hold
the fish only momentarily. You can be satisfied that
the fly has worked and your skill in presenting it has
deceived the fish. In this sense - you have touched the
fish and it has gone.

We therefore developed three ranges of “hooks” for
this - a long shank hook, a nymph hook and a dry
fly hook.

To start with these are available in limited sizes and at a
special introductory price because we want to encourage
reports back from those of you who take this important
step for the future of our fish.

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

The packaging presents the Tag hooks, also called Touch and Go, as three models: CS2001 for dry flies, CS2002 long shank and CS2003 for nymphs P. The back panel says the hooks were offered in limited sizes at a special introductory price P.

A hook listing page with a February 1999 footer note lists CS2001 in sizes 8, 10, 12 and 14. It does not list CS2002 V.

Design lineage

The front titles the range Bramley/Betts P. The back panel ends with a printed signature whose first name reads alan; the surname is not legible P. The panel’s text speaks in the first person for a writer who is not named in the text.

Dating

The green card prints its telephone and fax numbers as (0527) 543555 and (0527) 546956, without the 01 prefix that UK geographic dialling codes gained on 16 April 1995. The card was therefore probably printed before that date I. The black card prints no telephone number, and neither card is dated. The dates of the model itself are not established.

Designer

The back panel names John Betts, from the U.S.A., as having worked with the panel’s writer on the Tag concept P. The packaging gives no further detail about him.
