Summary

Ronn Lucas Sr. sells this blind-eye single hook under the pattern name Harrison & Bartleet V. The page documents it through one 5/0 specimen, identified by its owner’s pencil card rather than by maker packaging.

How to identify it

The recorded hook carries no maker’s mark, and its card is the owner’s pencil note, not maker packaging P. It is identified by form and by that card, not by marking.

The letters HB also appear in the name of a different Lucas hook, the Noble HB V. They do not by themselves identify this pattern.

One large barb raised as a sliver from the point's upper side, set off by a narrow V notch with a rounded hollow at its root; blunt tip P.

OBS-6
FinishBlack Japanned — stated on packaging
Show noteHide note

Glossy black coating over the whole hook, tool striations visible beneath P. Japanning is inferred from the maker's account of his early hooks I; photographs cannot confirm it.

OBS-7SRC-2SRC-5

The shank is straight and of even width from the bend to the start of the end taper, with no rings or marks P. The point is long and tapered and continues the line of the throat, with its tip turned slightly upward. A flat facet with fine lengthwise striations runs along its upper side beyond the barb P.

In side view the wire at the rear of the bend measures about 0.52-0.55 grid squares, against about 0.47 on the mid-shank P. Whether the bend is forged is not established, as no top view is recorded. No kirbed or reversed offset is evident in side view I.

The traced shank proportion is nearest the site’s 1X Long group (CMP-1).

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

Ronn Lucas Sr. lists the Harrison & Bartleet among the hook patterns he sells, in sizes 3/0 through 14/0 V. Sizes 3/0 to 8/0 are also offered as XL versions, a term the product page does not define V.

Design lineage

The pattern carries the name of Harrison & Bartleet, a late nineteenth-century firm. The maker’s product page says the pattern matches hooks also called Harrison’s. It notes that Harrison & Bartleet and Harrison & Co. were separate firms of that period, citing Pennell (1885) V.

Dating

The maker's shop history places his first hooks in July 2006, so no Lucas hook predates that year V.
The specimen's card is dated 4/18/18 P; what that date records is not known.
No end date is established.

Ronn Lucas Sr. — Ronn Lucas Sr. bought Ron Reinhold's hook-making business in May 2006 and set up the equipment in Milwaukie, Oregon, where the first Lucas hooks were made that July V. A 2015 profile describes his output as a wide range of blind-eye salmon hooks V. Read the maker’s history →
Before the Shop. Before he bought Ron Reinhold's hook business, Lucas bent large hooks that Reinhold then hardened and japanned for him V.
