How to identify it

Check the lid label for a key device with ‘Key’ above and ‘Brand’ below, the number ‘Qual. 36814’, and the address line ‘OSLO – NORWAY’ V. Three specification lines follow the ‘Mustad-Limerick Hooks’ line V.

On the recorded box the size is written by hand in purple ink on the ‘No.’ line, and the printed count is 100 V. On the hook, look for an eye bent up from the shank, a plain shank, and one barb cut near the point P.

The label abbreviations are read as turned up (‘T. up’) and extra-fine (‘Ex. fine’) I. No source located defines them.

No photograph shows the wire end-on, so the label’s ‘Oval wire’ cannot be checked against the metal. Wire thickness measured from the silhouette against the catalog sits nearest the standard category, though the label prints ‘Ex. fine wire’ and the comparison is not decisive.

Shank proportion measured from the silhouette falls nearest the standard category, although the label prints ‘Short shank’. A label line beginning ‘Hollow’ is partly hidden by the hook, and a side-on view cannot show whether the inner face is concave.

Closed lidded box with a paper label on the lid. One hook rests on the label across a strip of tape, eye at left, and covers parts of the 'Hollow' and 'Limerick Hooks' lines. The box interior and any other hooks are not photographed, so the count behind the printed 100 is not verified. Yellowed cellophane tape crosses the label and its adhesive partly covers lettering. A yellow-brown stain sits right of the model number, orange-brown discoloration runs along the lower label edge, a small dark red-brown spot marks the left end of the tape, and the lid edges are frayed. The label edge at upper right sits slightly proud of the lid.

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

The label carries a key device with the word ‘Key’ above and ‘Brand’ below P, and Key Brand is listed among Mustad’s brands V. A US registration for MUSTAD KEY BRAND BEAK HOOKS, filed December 4, 1939, records first use on fish hooks in June 1939 V. The registered mark is worded for beak hooks and does not date this label or the 36814.

Design lineage

The label names the line ‘Mustad-Limerick Hooks’ and carries the number ‘Qual. 36814’ V.

Dating

The label carries the Key Brand device, an Oslo - Norway address and 'Made in Norway' V. A trademark record shows Mustad using a Key Brand mark on fish hooks by June 1939 V. No source located dates this label or the 36814, so the c. 1940s-1960s range is an estimate S.

Oslo on the label. The box label prints an Oslo - Norway address. The company's Wikipedia entry lists Gjøvik as Mustad's present headquarters, and neither source states where the 36814 was made V.

Use

  • Salmon
  • Sea trout

Primary application

The label states no intended use, and the photographs do not show one.
