Keep the box and hooks dry. The lid paper is worn to the board along the left, right and bottom edges, and the top edge has lifted tears. Lift the box by its sides and keep it from rubbing against other items.

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

The lid pairs the quality number ‘Qual. 1798’ with the pattern name ‘Mustad-Kendal Round Hooks’ P. A history of British hook making lists Kendal among the patterns that had developed by 1823, when Redditch makers competed with firms in Aberdeen, Dublin, Kendal and Limerick V.

Merriam-Webster defines a related term, Kendal sneck bent, as a wide, squarish, curved fishhook pattern, probably named for Kendal, England V. That entry does not mention the round bend, so any link to the Kendal Round bend is inferred I.

Dating

The lid carries no date, price or code. The Key Brand name appears in a US trademark filing for fish hooks dated 4 December 1939 V, so the name does not narrow the date. Only the lid face was photographed. No source dating this box or Qual. 1798 has been found.
