How to identify it

The quality number sits under the maker’s name and address as ‘Qual. 9065’. The product name, ‘Mustad – Kinsey Hooks’, is in the largest, heaviest type on the label, above ‘Flatted Japanned’ P. A key device with ‘Key’ above it and ‘Brand’ below fills the left column.

The label is turquoise with gold printing and a border of repeating multi-petal rosettes. On the recorded box the printed ‘No.’ is followed by a blue 9 that is not gold print and appears to be stamped P.

The label states Japanned. The photographed hook has a glossy black coating with a bluish sheen on the outer bend P.

LBL-6OBS-6

A blind eye is a shank end with no opening. On this hook the shank end is flattened, and the label’s ‘Flatted’ appears to refer to it I. The shank itself is plain, with no ridges, kink or stamped marks at the photographed scale P.

The label reads ‘Hollow Point’. In side view, the inner edge of the photographed point between the barb tip and the point tip appears concave P. Mustad’s current product text describes a hollow point as hollowed or rounded out between those two places V. Whether that meaning applied when this box was labeled is not documented.

The photographs show the hook lying on its side. They cannot show whether the point is offset.

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

The box prints the number as a quality number, ‘Qual. 9065’. Mustad printed the same ‘Qual.’ abbreviation before the number on its ‘Qual. 9479’ label V.

Design lineage

Kinsey was already a named hook bend or style by 1867. A source citing Francis Francis’s A Book on Angling of that year lists it among the bends of the time and says Hutchinson of Kendal made the Kinsey hook V. That source is secondary, and the 1867 book itself was not opened.

The box reads ‘Mustad – Kinsey Hooks’. The label does not say whether the name refers to that bend, and no opened source ties Mustad’s 9065 to Hutchinson’s hook.

Dating

No barcode and no telephone number appear among the printed regions recorded on the lid P. The label shares wording with a Mustad mark first used in October 1929 and registered in 1930: Key Brand, O. Mustad & Son, Manufacturers, Oslo-Norway, a Qual. number, Hollow Point and a count of 100 V. That shows the wording existed by 1930. It does not date this box, because no dated catalog or packaging for the 9065 is recorded.

O. Mustad & Son — Mustad bought property at Lilleaker in Kristiania, now Oslo, in 1875 and moved nail and some other ironware production there in 1876 V. The box label gives Oslo - Norway; the record does not say where this model was made. Read the maker’s history →
The American Kinsey. According to a source citing Francis Francis's 1867 book, he called the Kinsey hook the 'American Kinsey' V. The source does not say why.

Use

  • Bait fishing

Primary application

No intended use is documented for this model.

Other uses

Saltwater bait fishing (estuaries, coastal waters). Fresh-water bream and pike baiting (in regions where gut-snelled or thread-attached hooks remained standard practice).

Collecting and buying

5.5 / 10CollectabilityRarity: Scarce

No scarcity basis is documented for this model: there is no count of surviving examples, catalog listing or recorded sale. A collectability rating is not stated until one of these exists.

This model is documented from one boxed size 9 specimen. Its label wording, markings and condition are recorded in the specimen entry. Sale records and examples in other sizes or packagings would let the page state a scarcity basis and a value range.

Market value

Insufficient recorded sales data to estimate a reliable value.

0 sold observations recorded; 2 are needed, with the basis and date of the range, before a value is shown. Asking prices are shown as asking prices only.

No sold sales are recorded for this model. A value range is shown only when at least two sold results are on file.

Where to find

eBay.co.uk (most likely source; UK-based collectors prioritize British and Scandinavian vintage bait tackle). European antique markets and tackle fairs (particularly UK, Scandinavia, Netherlands). Specialist dealers in vintage fishing tackle (e.g., East Coast Tackle Auctions, Northern Fishing Heritage groups). Institutional auctions (museum deaccessioning, fishing museum collections).
