His designs proved so influential that competitors copied Tiemco’s model numbers and design language, a phenomenon Shimazaki himself acknowledged with the observation that ‘five flies tied on the real thing (Tiemco) fish better than two dozen on imitations’ V. Shimazaki also developed Tiemco’s flagship floatant product, Shimazaki Dry-Shake, which became an industry standard. His partnership with American commercial fly-tyer Dennis Black of Umpqua—sealed in 1984 with a handshake agreement—established the critical distribution pathway that made Tiemco hooks globally accessible to Western fly fishers.
