How to identify it

The black label for the model reads 5644 F., with the size given as No 21, and names the hook Hollow Pointed Salmon Fish Hooks, Flatted P. A pictorial mark sits at upper left of the label; it is unclear at this resolution P.

On the hook, look for a blind eye: a flattened, spade-shaped end with no hole or slot, which may carry a small impressed mark P. The size 21 specimen is 40.08 mm long with thin round wire of .038 in E. Its point has a ground inner face with file striations, and the barb is cut up from that face P.

Dark blue-black with a blue sheen on lit surfaces; greyer bare-metal wear along point and barb. No packaging text names a finish; blued is inferred from appearance. I

OBS-7LBL-1LBL-7

The flatted eye, also called a blind eye, is a spade-shaped flat on the end of the shank with no eye opening. On the photographed specimen no hole or slot shows through the flat, and a small impressed mark sits on its face P.

The label names the point hollow pointed. A hollow point has its inner face ground concave between barb and tip.

In the photograph the inner face is ground and carries fine file striations, but a concave section cannot be distinguished in a side view P. The barb is cut up from this face P.

The photographed wire is round and falls in the fine (1X fine) group of the catalog, about 0.9 mm by grid and 0.97 mm by caliper E. The shank is straight and plain, and its proportion falls in the 3X long group E.

The hook is held by two narrow paper straps through slits across the shank, with a faint dent outline around it. The strip spells the maker MILLWARD; the black label spells it MILWARD.
Who applied the strip and the lower-right label, and when, is not recorded. The black label may be a photograph of a printed reproduction rather than of this specimen's packaging.

Block 3: black label photographed separately; 5644 F. at upper right, No at centre-left and 21 at right on the second line, the remaining lines centred below, and a pictorial mark at upper left. Whether block 3 belongs to this specimen's package is not established.
Typeface
Block 1: bold dot-matrix-style sans face; the hyphen in E-BAY prints as a long dash. Block 2: serif type. Block 3: pale lettering on black, with the first letter of SONS' lost to glare.
Printed marks
No barcode is visible on the card face.
Later marks
None visible on the card face. A tiny fine-line scribble beside the trademark on the black label is not legible: [?][?].

Care of this specimen: Orange-brown specks inside the bend show corrosion has started, so keep the hook dry and check it from time to time. Leave it on its card with the paper straps in place, and handle the card by its edges.

Pattern history and manufacturer context

Series

A black label photographed with the specimen gives the model as 5644 F., size No 21, under the heading Hollow Pointed Salmon Fish Hooks, Flatted P. The F probably refers to the word Flatted on the same label I. No Milward catalogue listing for 5644F was found, so its place in a numbered series is not documented.

Design lineage
